OPERATION HAWAII -Weekly update number 8: Brought to you by VELOCITY SPORTS LAB

Date:25 July 2010

With the ITU World Long Distance Triathlon Champs just 7 days away, training has been cut down significantly. Friday and Saturday were rest days, with only a short 3km swim to keep the body loose. I’ve had quite a bit of luck this year with planning my rest days. Each scheduled rest day has always been greeted with pouring rain, and this time was no different.

Thursday was my last hard session, which included a 100km cycle on the race route to start, with hard efforts on all the up-hills (which by now you must know that there are many). The ride ended at the nearby running track where I had a session of 800m repeats with 200m recovery. I like doing this as my last hard session as I get a chance to see just what my running legs have in them when they are fatigued. And after going through the 10km mark in just under 38min, I’m confident that I’m on form.

But with rest comes the uncertainty of how your body will respond, and it seems that I have picked up a bug or virus of some kind. The last two days have been spent lying in bed, either shivering or burning up. The muscles are all aching, as is my head, and I have extreme abdominal discomfort. There’s no diarroeah or vomiting, which is always a good thing, so hopefully it will pass soon.

So you’ll have to excuse this blog for being so short, as sitting in front of the computer is rather uncomfortable. I’ll be off to bed again, hopefully to mend. Next week will be the big race report, let’s hope there’s some good news.
